The Down Syndrome Cure and Eugenics

This is a couple of years old at this point, but I recently saw it resurface the other day.

Iceland and Denmark have both been heavily boasted about because they have found a cure for Down syndrome. As of 2017ish, they basically eradicated Down syndrome altogether. Their cure is so successful, in fact, that in 2014 and 2015, only two babies in Denmark with Down syndrome were born. Just two.

What exactly is this miracle cure? Abortion.

Termination, abortion, murder, an exercise of women’s rights, genocide, choose your preferred synonym. Regardless, the end result is the same: a bunch of dead babies.

Disclaimer: I’m wholeheartedly against all abortions except for the statistically rare (unicorn-style rare) cases where the mother’s life is legitimately in danger of being ended. The death of the baby is still terrible, but only one person dying instead of two is better than both dying, but still terrible.

This large-scale genocide has all the classic ingredients that would legitimately make Margaret Sanger and Hitler proud. The more searching I did, the more I discovered just how much they both had in common: they both wanted an elite group of people to be the ruling class, systematic extermination of those who were deemed inferior or undesirable, population control, forced sterilization, work camps, and they were both egregious humans, among other similarities.

Another interesting thing I have discovered amid my flurry of Google activity and book reading is that having abortions due to potentially undesirable traits, like Down syndrome, is ideologically the same as the ideologies of Hitler and the Nazis during the Holocaust.

Some people may think that is extreme and inaccurate, but is it? Is it really? Give it a ponder.

According to this Auschwitz website,

The Holocaust was the systematic annihilation of six million Jews by the Nazi regime during World War 2. In 1933 approximately nine million Jews lived in the 21 countries of Europe that would be occupied by Germany during the war. By 1945 two out of every three European Jews had been killed. The European Jews were the primary victims of the Holocaust.

But Jews were not the only group singled out for persecution by Hitler’s Nazi regime. As many as one-half million Gypsies, at least 250,000 mentally or physically disabled persons, and more than three million Soviet prisoners-of-war also fell victim to Nazi genocide. Jehovah’s Witnesses, homosexuals, Social Democrats, Communists, partisans, trade unionists, Polish intelligentsia and other undesirables were also victims of the hate and aggression carried out by the Nazis.”

If we replace the word Jews with unborn babies who may potentially have Down syndrome or any other less-than-optimum-as-defined-by-societal-norms health condition, then the mass genocide of unborn babies in Denmark, Iceland, Germany, France, Belgium, England, Switzerland, and some parts of the U.S. is basically the same as the mass genocide of the Nazi Holocaust, ideologically speaking.

Abortion used to be thought of as a “safe, legal, and rare” event, which is still terrible and morally reprehensible. More recently, though, it has turned into abortions on demand, where women should “shout their abortion,” and use it as a primary form of birth control because it’s one of their inherent penumbral Rights guaranteed by the Constitution. However, 1) the Roe v. Wade decision is poorly written law, and 2) that doesn’t change the fact that it’s still bad and morally reprehensible.

In those contexts, it’s generally argued that abortion is necessary because it’s inconvenient for a myriad of reasons (e.g., poor timing for the parents, wasn’t a planned pregnancy, not financially practical, etc.), because the baby’s life hasn’t begun yet (even though basically all science says life starts at conception), or because the woman’s rights trump those of the baby (which is intellectually inconsistent).

With this newer wave of eugenic abortions, however, it’s much more grotesque and blunt. This new wave is the termination of babies because of who they inherently are as a person, or more accurately, who they might be as a person outside of the womb since some of the genetic tests aren’t always 100% accurate, much like how the Nazis killed Jews, Gypsies, homosexual people, and disabled people during the Holocaust. The new arguments essentially say, “I know you’re a human life. I don’t care. I don’t like who you are as a person, and we don’t need or want you or your kind in our society.”

This article from Public Discourse expanded more on this idea:

“The abortion decision is no longer just that baleful utilitarian calculus, ‘In order to enhance my life’s prospects, I must utterly destroy your life’s prospects.’ It is now, ‘You may not live, because of who you are.’ Recall that the first group Hitler sought to destroy was gay people—because of who they were. In China, girls are aborted—because of who they are. In Rwanda, the Tutsis were slaughtered—because of who they were. In America, we have something called pregnancy reduction—a euphemism—when one of twins or triplets is aborted, usually because he or she is smaller than the other. You’re short—you go.

With Down syndrome, as the columnist George Will has written, ‘it is simply the deliberate systematic attempt to erase a category of people.’ In other words, it is a form of genocide. It goes beyond eugenics, for Down syndrome people rarely reproduce.”

In this article from Human Life International, Brian Clowes proposes that the abortion movement as a whole is actually worse than the Nazi Holocaust:

“One of the few differences between the Nazi and American Holocausts is that the ability to make the decision to kill has been delegated from the Nazi death camp (Vernichtungslager) commandants and doctors to individual citizens.

The killing still occurs on a massive scale. But instead of the murders being concentrated in just a few places, they are scattered all over the country, and the choice to abort is made by the child’s parents.  From this perspective, the American Holocaust could be considered worse than the Nazi Holocaust, since many abortions are performed for reasons of personal convenience.”

After reading his entire article a few times, I would say it’s a pretty decent proposition with some incredibly solid footing to support it.

The takeaway:

  1. Abortion is bad.
  2. Aborting unborn babies because you don’t like a certain type of people is also bad.
  3. Genocide is bad.
  4. The Holocaust was terrible, duh.
  5. Margaret Sanger was an awful human and the founding principles of Planned Parenthood are much more pernicious than anyone ever talks about.
  6. There is an easy way to fix this epidemic: stop killing unborn babies.
