Spring Turkey Season 2025

The spring turkey hunting season is coming to a close in a couple of days.

Historically, Lyla’s favorite birds have been all the species of woodpeckers and owls. However, lately, she’s become particularly attached to turkeys.

Over the past couple of months, I’ve been ramping up for my first proper attempt at turkey hunting. I’ve only ever really hunted deer, pheasant, and squirrel, so going after turkey has been a completely different dynamic for me.

What I’m getting at is that I had (and still have) no idea what I’m doing. I understand the basic concepts: gun, camo, gear, woods, bird, time. I just had no idea how to put it all together and actually be productive.

After many hours on The Hunting Public’s YouTube channel, I learned that turkey hunting is, in theory, quite simple: seduce a bird with a brain the size of a walnut—and kill it.

I wasn’t successful. I hunted three days this season: one was a draw hunt, one was private land, and today was public land. I had a couple of toms gobble at me on the private land, but I couldn’t get them to come within range. Today, I saw a hen meandering by but wasn’t able to find any others.

What’s been more entertaining, though, is that Lyla has been asking to watch turkey hunting videos. She’ll just walk up and say, “Dad, can we watch the turkey hunting video?”

She’s seen quite a few of The Hunting Public’s videos. Just yesterday, we were watching one of their videos and when they shot one, she excitedly said, “Dad! They smoked that big turkey!”

Maybe she’ll be able to go with me next season. We’ll have to see how things progress.

In the meantime, here’s a video of her watching one of THP’s episodes and attempting to make owl calls along with them. This went on for a solid 10 minutes.
